A message from Ineke:
Happy New Year! I hope you
enjoyed the holidays and are well rested
to begin a new year. 2008 promises to be a
busy and growth- filled year for Mindful
Movement .I have accepted
a faculty position at Ohlone College
teaching both ballet and Pilates. The
Pilates classes will be held twice a week,
Monday and Wednesday from 12:45-1:45 at
the new
Newark
campus on
Cherry Street
. Please pass the word on to anyone you
know who may be interested.
I also am so pleased that
the studio is now an official hosting site
for STOTTPILATES™ certifications and
workshops. Gail, Annie, and myself all
received our certifications from
STOTTPILATES™ I love that our studio
will be a place of learning and
development for new instructors and I hope
they will feel welcome and supported. Part
of their training includes practicing the
Pilates repertoire on their own as well as
practice teaching. The studio will be
available to the students for their
practice, so you may see some of them when
you are here for your sessions. They will
not infringe on your time or space as they
will know that they must defer equipment
and space to clients. I am excited about
all of the energy this program will bring
to Mindful Movement as the studio becomes
even more a place of learning and growth.
Improvements have been
made to the studio, but we are not done
yet! The heated ceiling fan has made a big
difference. Now, we need to find a way to
insulate the back door – I am working on
that and we should have it solved just in
time for Spring and the warm weather!
We replaced the hot water
heater so we can now wash our hands in
warm water.
Equipment improvements for
2008 include acquiring a fourth reformer
and chair and replacing our mats. I also
hope to
add jump boards to the mix.
I am excited that we are
building up our workshop schedule again.
In February, I am teaching an anatomy
workshop and more will be added as the
year progresses, so keep checking the
website. Aside from our own workshop
schedule, we are lucky to be able to take
advantage of Making The Pointe’s master
class in February – Gyrokinesis. Some of
you have already signed up – I know I am
very much looking forward to it!
As the studio grows and
improves in 2008, I look forward to my own
growth as an instructor and business woman
as well as a “mindful mover” and I
invite you to join me on this journey
toward understanding and improving
ourselves through mind/body movement.
Wishing you a healthy,
happy, and peaceful 2008!
In Peace,
Ineke

BIG
News:
Mindful
Movement is an official
STOTTPILATES™
Hosting Site!
We are so pleased to share with you the great news
that we are now an official STOTT PILATES™
hosting site. This means that we will be
offering the STOTT PILATES™
certification program right out of our
studio! STOTT PILATES™ is an
international leader in the Pilates
industry. More information about STOTT
PILATES™ can be seen by visiting their
website at www.stottpilates.com
As many of you already know, Ineke has been an
Instructor Trainer for STOTT PILATES™,
teaching these certification courses out
of Almaden Valley Athletic Club (AVAC) in
San Jose
since 2004. Because AVAC decided not to
renew their license with STOTT PILATES™
in 2008, a wonderful opportunity presented
itself to hold these courses at Mindful
Movement. So far, the courses scheduled
for 2008 are Advanced Reformer, Advanced
Mat, Intensive Reformer, and Intensive Mat
Plus with Injuries and Special
Populations, Intensive Cadillac, Chair,
and Barrels, and Advanced Cadillac Chair,
and Barrels to be added soon.
This is great for our studio as it will help to build
revenue as well as exposure so that we may
continue to grow to offer our clients the
best “mindful movement” in the area.
You may see more about the program and schedule by

Making
The Pointe Professional Training Center is
very pleased to be offering a master class
in Gyrokinesis with Catharine Grow.
Gyrokinesis is a flowing form of Yoga that
opens, releases, and stimulates the spine.
We
hope that some of you will take advantage
of this opportunity to explore another
genre of movement congruent with Pilates
and Yoga.
The
class will be held on Saturday, February 2nd
from 11:30-1 at the Making The Pointe
studio. For more information, please visit
www.makingthepointe.org . If you would like to sign up for this class, you

Focus on Anatomy: Anatomy Workshop
In
the past, I have included an article on
some aspect of our anatomy or physiology
in the newsletter. This month, I’d like
to bring your attention to the anatomy
workshop we will be offering in February
at the studio. The course is designed for
people who are preparing for their Pilates
certification courses or exams, but
clients are strongly encouraged to take it
as well. The workshop will span 8 hours
over the course of 4 days spread out
through the entire month. We will cover
bones and muscles of the human body and
learn where they are and what they do.
Knowledge is power and the more you know
about your own body, the more powerful
your Pilates practice will be!
For
more information about this workshop,
please visit our website at www.mindfulmovementcoop.com
and click “workshops” or contact Ineke
and ineke@mindfulmovementcoop.com

Beta-carotene supplementation
long-term may delay mental decline
In a newly published study,
researchers tested the cognitive
function of participants in the
Physicians' Health Study II (PHSII),
a continuation of the Physicians'
Health Study (PHS) trial looking at
the effects of beta-carotene and
other vitamin supplements on chronic
disease. The subjects included
participants from the original PHS
(started in 1982) and newer recruits
from 1998.
The researchers tested the general
cognition, verbal memory, and
category fluency of 5,956
participants, including 4,052
participants from the PHS with a
minimum supplementation period of 18
years.
Among the 1,904 newly recruited
subjects (average supplementation of
1 year) no differences in cognition
were evident whether they took
beta-carotene or the placebo.
However, among the long-term
supplement users from the PHS, the
mean global score (average of all
tests) was significantly higher in
the beta carotene group than in the
placebo. On verbal memory, men
receiving long-term beta carotene
supplementation also performed
significantly better than the
placebo group. The potential
mechanism for the protective effects
could be related to the role of
vitamin A and beta-carotene on beta-amyloid
protein production in the brain. The
build-up of plaque from beta-amyloid
deposits is associated with
oxidative stress, cell death, and
increased risk of Alzheimer's disease.
The study is the first to look at
long-term antioxidant
supplementation in relation to a
decline in cognitive function that
occurs naturally with age, and that
precedes diseases such as
Alzheimer's.
